Have you ever been driving down the road and thought, “what in the world is that smell?” I certainly have and often times it could be a gym bag, remnants of the dog or even an old take-out food bag. But, in this case, it was my air vents. And let me tell you, there is nothing worse than driving down the road with stinky air blasting in your face. I mean, am I right? Consider me your air vent guru this week. I have your guide to cleaning out those air vents and creating a great smelling environment for your Summer adventures!

What you need:

  • Cotton swabs
  • Paper towels
  • Scent-free interior car cleaner
  • Disinfectant spray
  • Vacuum
  • Cabin filter (proper filter can be found in your owner’s manual)

Step 1: Cleaning your vent

  • Start the process by vacuuming up any loose dirt, pollen, or dust out of your vents. If your vacuum has a small extension piece, hook it up and get all that cruddy stuff out of those vents. Get a few cotton swabs soaped in your interior car cleaner and work the swab into all the nooks and crannies of the vent. Clean the slots the same way using the paper towels. Don’t forget about the vents in the backseat and the ones that are down low under the dash!

Step 2: Ridding your car of the smell

  • To keep your vehicle smelling fresh, you should change the cabin air filter regularly. Its main job is to filter out all those nasty particles and can play a huge role in stinking up your ride! Your owner’s manual will have the exact location of your filter if you are unsure of where it is located. *NOTE: never work on your vehicle’s engine or near the engine if it is warm/hot.* Swap out the filter and you’re good to go!
