Making sure your vehicle’s fluid levels are at appropriate levels is always important, but especially so in the winter. One of the most import level to check during the winter is your coolant levels. Coolant, or also known as antifreeze, helps keep your engine cool and protects it from overheating. If your engine was to overheat that would become a pretty hefty price tag, so we suggest that you keep your coolant level where it should be to avoid a headache and a wallet ache. If you’re unsure of how to check your coolant levels, don’t stress, we did the hard work for you this week and created a step-by-step process for you.

Make sure that the engine is cold before working under the hood. Also, make sure that your vehicle is on flat ground. If your vehicle is parted on a hill it could give false readings due till the tilt of the vehicle.

Steps:

  • Pop open your hood and locate the coolant reservoir. This will most likely be on the far right or left side of the vehicle.
  • Once you find it, open it up and look for the line that marks the correct level of coolant need.
  • If it is below the line be sure to top it off to the line that is marked.
  • Be sure to check back to see if the coolant stays at the level to ensure there isn’t a leak
