We can only hope that spring is right around the corner, but we all know that saying  “April showers bring May flowers,” right? Well, with how unpredictable the weather has been this year I wouldn’t be surprised if we get some showers before April comes. Even if the spring showers do hold off to April it is always good to be one step ahead. Preparing for heavy rains might sound boring, but the truth is flooding and heavy rains are no joke. The chances that you get stuck driving in a downpour are more likely than you think…and they can be extremely dangerous. So, please take a few minutes and read the information and tips below. These tips will help you get from point A to point B safely during heavy rains and flooding. And let’s be honest your safety is everyone’s #1 goal. So take a look and if you have any questions, feel free to give us a call!

Heavy Rain:

  • Turn your headlights on to help other drivers see you
  • Use fog lights if your visibility is bad
  • Leave double the amount of space in between you and the vehicle in front of you
  • If your steering feels light due to aquaplaning, ease off the accelerator and slow down gradually.

Floods and standing water:

  • Try to avoid standing water at all costs
  • Don’t drive into flood water that’s moving or more than 4in deep. If you’re unsure about the depth let another car go before you.
  • Drive slowly and steadily so you don’t make a bow wave.
  • Test your brakes as soon as you can afterward.
  • Fast-moving water is very powerful, be careful because your vehicle could be swept away!

Watch out for:

  • Hazards under the water like curbs
  • Manhole covers that have been lifted by the water
  • Assume flood water is contaminated, try to avoid at all costs
